Who is Spalding in American Horror Story?

Spalding was introduced in American Horror Story: Coven in 2013 as a mute butler harboring an obsession with dolls.

Arguably his defining characteristic is his unwavering loyalty to Fiona (played by Jessica Lange). He loves her and goes so far as to help her kill Supreme – Anna Lee Layton, played by Kristen Ebersole – as well as Emma Roberts Madison.

In a stunning sequence, Myrtle (Francis Conroy) tries to get Spalding to confess by putting a spell on his tongue. Only able to tell the truth, he strengthens his loyalty by cutting.

It doesn’t quite work out though Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) makes sure the tongue can talk whether it’s related to Spalding or not. His tongue betrays him and Zoe kills him accordingly once the truth is discovered.

However, he remains as a ghost at the Miss Robichaux Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies.

Among the many things we learn from Coven, Spalding is quite proud of his pesky doll collection. This brings us neatly into the era of American horror stories…
