Andrew Christian Wiggins was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on February 23, 1995, and was raised in an athletic family. His father, Mitchell Wiggins, played basketball in the NBA, and his mother, Marietta Payne Wiggins, was an Olympic track star. He went on to play basketball for Vaughan High School in Ontario, and Huntington Prep School in West Virginia. While at Huntington, he attracted significant attention and was later named the 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year, the 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year, and the 2013 Mr. High school basketball player from SLAM magazine.

Wiggins attended the University of Kansas where he had an excellent season with the Jayhawks basketball team and was a Naismith College MVP semi-finalist as a freshman. In the 2014 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Andrew Wiggins with the first overall selection, and he became the second Canadian to be named number one in the draft. The previous year, Canadian Anthony Bennett was selected first overall, as well as by Cleveland. But Wiggins never played for the Cavaliers as the three-team trade sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a package that landed Kevin Love with Cleveland.
